Read Me

CONTACTS+ is a Filemaker Pro (version 1.x) database. It's main
purpose is to allow proper address details to appear (even
when some components of the address are omitted such as the
organization, country etc...) in Microsoft Word print-merge
documents. Other than that, you should find that CONTACTS+ is
just about as powerful and usable as any other `commercial'
Contacts database/manager.
    When exporting print-merge data, the FullAddress field
would replace all the individual fields that make up the
receipient's address. You should also export the title,
firstname and lastname fields, to be used in the greeting line,
ie Dear [title] [firstname] [lastname]... Other fields do not have
to be exported.
     Docu+ is a document manager. It is used in conjunction with
Contacts+ v 1.4 or higher. You can create and store simple
1 page documents in Docu+ and then use the MiniLetter helper
facility in Contacts+ to access the text stored in Docu+
to create print-merge (1 page only) letters.

    Plea: If you feel that CONTACTS+ or Docu+ has some useful
value and use it; and want to encourage me to improve my existing `products'
and develop other `affordable & useful' databases; and want to receive future

MICN 1.8 - Display small iconic representation for menu titles.

This hack is an implementation of an idea suggested by USENET
readers as a method for reclaiming menu bar space.  It has a cheesy
interface, but it is configurable with ResEdit.  See the documentation
for details on adding your own SICNs to the menu bar!

MICN is still free, still less than 20K on your disk, and still only 540 bytes
of code in your System Heap!  I would like to hear from someone using a color
monitor and System 6.  Do the color icons look OK when the menu is hilited?

If I'm not mistaken, .z (lowercase) files have been created by the unix
utilities pack(1) or compact(1). .Z (uppercase) files are created by
compress(1), a superior compression program to the two others.
MacCompress 3.2 I think is not designed to handle .z files, rather only
.Z files.

Any other insights out there??

Subject: Color Pivot woes

I've had my Color Pivot monitor for just one year now, and just today
had it replaced because of a possible problem with the internal sweep
module.  Or so I was told.  The display seemed to 'pulse' around the
edges of the screen, and the new monitor fixed that problem.

Problem is, the new monitor causes a system error when the orientation
is changed.  It'll start fine in either position, but won't allow a
change once the computer is on.

On the rather unlikely possibility that software was at fault (the old
monitor worked fine this morning) I have replaced the system software
(v7.1) and also the RadiusWare extension (v2.0) but with no luck.

I'm using a IIsi 5/80 with the Radius eight bit card, and I'm over 120
miles from the nearest Radius dealer.  I've had to drive there twice
this week, and I'm not looking forward to another trip.

Can anyone make any suggestions from their previous experience?

Subject: Hard Disk error (invalid node in extents directory ) !!

Dear Netters,
      I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Hope 1993 brings your
dreams true.

      Now to business. I periodically run Norton Utilities on my
MAC IIcx's internal HD, to optimize the speed (SpeedDisk). For the last
couple of times I have been getting a strange message:

        "The extents directory on this disk contains an invalid
node - node #2. Its records are out of order. Your files are safe.
Optimization cancelled."

       The disk does not have any bad sectors and tests okay with
"Norton Disk Doctor". I tried using "Disk First Aid" which comes
with System 7, but got the message :

      "the disk is damaged. Cannot be repaired with
       Disk First Aid".

       If anyone has encountered a similar problem, or if there are
any utilities to fix this problem, I would like to know. Also, how
serious is this problem? Can or have I lost any files? I haven't
stumbled on any problems yet.

Subject: Keyboard shortcut wanted

I've been wondering about this for ages.  You're saving a document and
you're presented with the Standard File dialog box; the line where the
filename goes is highlighted.  When you've typed your filename, you can
choose its location by getting into the directory structure using command +
up-arrow, and thereafter navigate around using the keyboard as we all know.
The thing is, say you want to get from the directory structure back to the
line where the filename is, using the keyboard.  What IS the shortcut?
Command + down-arrow takes you down a directory, and command plus the left
or right arrows switches volumes instead

Faster ways of translating software? Sure, but software can be
translated fairly easily when compared to translating documentation,
example files, etc. It's the "paperware" and other "informational
products" which take a big portion of both time-to-market and product
cost. A disk is a disk is a disk, and preparing 1-10 disks per each
language is almost trivial when compared to making and printing
several hundreds of pages of documentation for each language.

No small feat.

And, localizing the software without localizing the documentation etc.
is not, IMHO, localizing.

   It's a question of defining the "European market". If you take Europe as a
   whole, it is not much smaller than the U.S. market. But who said that
   every a company needs 10 employees in Liechtenstein and in San Marino and
   in Andorra?

Single European market? For _software_? Not in your dreams... Or maybe
you'd like to learn Finnish, Swedish or Icelandic and get all your
software in one single language? Or maybe French? German?
European market may be as large as the U.S., but much more diverse,
both culturally and language-wise. Even North American Free Trade Area
(NAFTA) covers fewer languages than, say, Switzerland... ;-)

And few U.S. companies have subsidiaries (or even distributors) in
every European country, and even if they do, the size of any office
is usually directly proportional to the size of the particular market.

   And don't think just because you're American, you need to have better
   prices than anyone else.

So, who should subsidize European software??? ;-)

Of course there's no "need" for software to cost less in the U.S.,
but due to the economics of scale they do. As long as the same
factors (customer base, distribution & marketing channels, etc.) are
not in place in Europe, (localized) software will continue to cost
more.

Still, that is no excuse to illegally copy software.

Recently I saw a board in a local software dealer that turns one's PC into a
TV.
I was put out by 50/50 Micro Electronics.  I called them and they said that
they
have no plans for a Mac version.  One bad thing about the board is that it
takes
the whole screen.  I would just like a small window, even a QuickTime sized
window would be OK with me.  Does anyone know if such a beast exist?  I would
be
very interested in such a device.  Any help would be appreciated.  If you
could
mail me direct, and I will post a summary, assuming one does exist.  If one
doesn't, I'll post those findings as well.  Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any experience with Mobius' new line of 040 accelerators?
Price-wise they sound great...a 40MHz 040 PDS card that is supposed to out-
perform a Quadra 950 (by their ad) for only $1499. I'm wondering if these
performance claims are legit and whether or not they have any compatibility
problems.

Along the same line, I would appreciate any info comparing Logicache's
50MHz 030 accelerator with Daystar's 50MHz Powercache.

Subject: Modems from Hell, PB Modems (C)

    I have a Global Village Powerport modem for my PB100.  I heeded a friends
recommendation when I bought it and didnt settle for a cheaper brand another
friend had bought.  I have had absolutely no trouble with the modem or the
software.  The fax software is so easy to use and so intuitive I cannot
immagine how it could be better done.  The friend who recommended it
evaluates & makes purchasing recommendations for a company with personnel
worldwide.  I hesitate to say, but I have no affiliation with GV.

Are you using ATM?  If so, which version?  ATM v 2.0.3 won't work correctly
with system 7.1.  You have to put your fonts back in their OLD places
(extensions folder and systems folder).  I understand that ATM v 3.0 fixes
this but I haven't nailed that one down yet.  Hope this helps a little.

I have a Mac student who is an art director and uses QuarkXPress,
Photoshop, etc. on a Quadra 900. Her husband is self-employed in
the video production field. My student plans to buy a Quadra 950 to
use at home for freelance projects and wishes to have her husband's
company be one of her clients. They both have this idea that video work
can be done on a Mac, but are not sure what. Their advice to date has
been from dealers. The quality of these explanations in terms of clarity
and accuracy have been spotty, at best. So, the question is, what sort of
work can they expect to accomplish (with a 950) and what sort of

The CommToolbox comes with a vt320 tool! You can use something like
Termy (author's name escapes me at the moment) in conjunction with the
VT320 tool as a pretty good emulator... & it's liable to be a lot less
expensive than MicroPhone II.

Subject: Word 5.1 to PM 4.2 translator

Last digest someone asked about a translator for importing Word
version 5.1 documents to PageMaker 4.2.  I beleive you already
have.  Your Word 5.0 translator should work.  I don't beleive that
Microsoft changed the file format.  They just added some features
to 5.0.  I will say that 5.1 does seem faster that 5.0 (or may be
it has been so long since I used the quick, lithe 4.0; so long
that sluggish 5.0 and 5.1 seem fast ;-).  I was able to import a
5.1 document into PM 4.2 without a problem.  THe formatting remained.
Now I admit that it was not the most complicated document in the world.
And as always, I reserve the right to be wrong.  It does happen every
once in a while! ;-)
